Why Can You Not See?

This past deer season, my grandson and I were given lessons in the art of locating rubs on trees in the woods. After many treks through the woods, via walking or riding the 4-wheelers, we have both become “experts” at finding rubs. One day we were riding around the farm on the 4-wheeler, when my husband pointed out a new rub. Deer rub 2My grandson and I immediately began searching to find it. I found it! However, I asked my grandson, “Do you see it?” His prompt response was, “No! I can’t see it!” In an effort to help him find the rub, I pointed my finger toward the tree, all while giving him verbal ques (take two steps to your left… take three steps forward…. now, look up) all to no avail. He still could not see it! Why could he not see it? I moved the 4-wheeler back, then forward, trying to give him a different view. boy eyesUnbelievably, he still had not spotted the rub. From my perspective, it was in plain sight. After what felt like an eternity, he walked straight to the tree with the rub. We both had a good laugh as he got back on his 4-wheeler, joking as to why he could not find it in the first place.

In that moment, I realized we as people, are much the same. We all have different backgrounds. We all have different histories. We all have different experiences. No matter where we came from or what has happened in this life, we all see things differently. Similar to the rub on the tree, you might not be able to see it, but it may stick out like a sore thumb to others. When things happen in our lives and we take the path of destruction, we become blind, refusing to acknowledge our dire circumstances as well as our approaching disintegration. Denial helps us continue living within our selfish lifestyle. Our idols become our entire existence. Eventually, we start to think, “This is the way it is supposed to be…” Drug abuse, lying, cheating, pornography, gambling, eating disorders, self-mutilation and a multitude of many other things have become our living, breathing idols.

1 Corinthians 10: 13-14 English Standard Version (ESV)

“13No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man.
God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your
ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of
escape, that you may be able to endure it. 14Therefore, my
beloved, flee from idolatry.”
